About Field, Farm & Forest
Nature-based education in Vermont rooted in outdoor play, curiosity, community and meaningful connections with the natural world.
Field, Farm & Forest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing nature-based education in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Our programs give children meaningful time outdoors to explore, play, create, build relationships and develop a lasting connection with the places around them.
Our Mission
Our Mission: Nature-Based Education in Vermont
We believe every child deserves abundant time outdoors and plenty of opportunities for self-directed learning. Nature and free play invite children to move their bodies, use their imaginations, solve problems, build relationships and experience the world through all of their senses.
Children learn through curiosity. A trail, stream, garden, snowfall, insect, fallen branch or patch of mud can become the beginning of a question, a story, an experiment or a shared adventure. Our educators create safe and supportive environments, then make room for children to investigate what captures their attention.
Through our programs, we strive to cultivate curiosity, community and nature connection throughout Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. We hope that children who develop a meaningful relationship with the natural world early in life carry that sense of connection, responsibility and wonder with them as they grow.
What Guides Our Work
- Outdoor childhood: meaningful time outside in every season.
- Child-led learning: curiosity and discovery help shape each day.
- Play: children need time to imagine, create, move and experiment.
- Community: relationships with peers, educators and families matter.
- Nature connection: children learn to know and care for the places around them.
- Individual growth: children develop at different rates and in different ways.
Our Story
Our History in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom
What began as a small nature school has grown into a nonprofit organization serving children and families through nature preschool, homeschool programs, summer camps and other outdoor learning experiences.
2013
A Little Nature School Begins
Field, Farm & Forest began as a small nature school for children ages 3–6 at the Inn at Mountain View Farm in East Burke. From the beginning, the focus was simple: give children more time outdoors, more freedom to play and more opportunities to learn from the natural world.
Growing
Putting Down Roots
As the organization grew, the nature school developed into a licensed childcare program and expanded its reach. Field, Farm & Forest continued building a community around outdoor childhood, play-based learning and a shared belief that children benefit from regular connection with nature.
Today
More Ways to Learn Outdoors
Today, our work includes Kinglets Nature School, Coyote Club homeschool programs and nature summer camps. These programs serve children at different ages while remaining grounded in exploration, relationships, play and nature connection.
Fall 2026
A Permanent Home
The next chapter brings Field, Farm & Forest to its permanent home on Brown Farm Road in Lyndonville. The property gives children access to wooded trails, streams, garden space, open grass and indoor spaces designed to support year-round learning and community.
Our Work Today
Learning Through Nature, Play and Relationships
Our educators support children as they investigate forests, fields, weather, wildlife, gardens and the changing seasons. Learning may begin with a child’s question, a collaborative building project, a trail discovery, imaginative play or simply enough uninterrupted time to notice what is happening outdoors.
Kinglets Nature School operates within Vermont’s early-childhood licensing framework. Families interested in the state’s childcare system can learn more through the Vermont Child Development Division.
The People Behind the Mission
Field, Farm & Forest is shaped by educators, co-founders, board members, families and community supporters. Several people who helped build the organization remain involved today, alongside newer educators carrying the mission forward.
Our New Home
Our New Lyndonville Location — Fall 2026
Beginning in fall 2026, our educators will welcome families to Field, Farm & Forest’s permanent home on Brown Farm Road in Lyndonville.
Our new little school includes wooded trails, trickling streams, footbridges, garden beds, open grass space, a deck for snacking and making art, large windows, plenty of natural light, and a full kitchen for cooking and baking. We cannot wait to share it with you.
